Star Wars Legacy: Vector - Updates

Ok well I've recently covered the events of the Vector arc in Legacy, but while it's fresh in my mind I'll just do this update post, noting additional characters and key events for existing ones. Most of it will have already been discussed but there may be a few moments skipped or that occur "off the page" worth noting. So let's roll on.

Sith Updates

Karness Muur
Species: Human
Sex: Male
Homeworld: Unknown
Position: Sith Lord
First Appearance: Knights of the Old Republic #25 (Vector, part 1)

Karness Muur is one of the oldest Sith Lords in existence, one of the first few darksiders who fled known space and established the Sith order. He fought in the Hundred Year Darkness and is thought to be responsible for creating Sith Leviathans on Corbos. After the Jedi won the battle, he and other dark Jedi including Adjunta Pall and Xoxaan, who'se holocron trained Darth Krayt, landed in a primitive corner of the galaxy, conquering the native species. He continued experimenting in monstrous forms of life creating a talisman that turned nearby beings into mindless Rakghouls - he also bound his Spirit to the talisman so that when he died physically he would remain in the talisman and capable of possessing whoever tried to gain it's power. For millenia he endured as was passed from owner to owner or was lost until he was eventually bound to Celeste Morne, who kept him prisoner for four millenia. He saw opportunities to escape with Vader, Luke and Cade Skywalker, but was thwarted every time by Morne. He made a final bid for power when Darth Krayt arrived at Had Abaddon, but made the fatal error of trying to posess Cade, who shunned his power and destroyed the talisman, finally ending Muur's reign.

Darth Reave

Species: Devaronian
Sex: Male
Homeworld: Korriban (?)
Position: Sith Lord
First Appearance: Legacy #29 (Vector, part 10)

This Sith Lord was stationed on Deep Core outpost Had Abaddon. He sensed Cade's arrival and rallied the stormtroopers there against the attack, but they could not withstand the power of the Muur Talisman. Despite his skills with the force and his two lightsabers he could not hold them off and was bitten by a Rakghoul. He resisted the plague long enough to report back to Darth Krayt and then was overtaken and struck down by Darth Stryfe.

The One Sith

The Sith sent to Had Abaddon didn't fare so well. Darth Stryfe fell into a trap set by Cade and Jariah and was taken out by thermal detonators. Darth Talon lost in combat against Cade Skywalker and Darth Maladi was knocked out when Celeste made a force whirlwind to hurl Krayt off a cliff. All three are having bacta treatment initiated by Darth Wyyrlok.

Wyyrlok himself killed his master, Darth Krayt and now has to think very carefully about his next move.

Jedi Updates

Celeste Morne
Species: Human
Sex: Female
Homeworld: Ossus
Position: Covenant Shadow
First Appearance: Knights of the old Republic #25 (Vector, part 1)

Celeste was recruited by the ancient Jedi WatchCircle as one of their secret operatives watching for the return of the Sith. Off official records these Shadows acted quickly to hunt out traces of the Sith and destroy them. Celeste was a renowned operative and so was given the task of tracking down the Muur Talisman when her masters had a vision of it. When there she grouped with Zayne Carrick and followed the Talisman to Mandalorian outpost Jebble. She was possessed by the talisman and hid herself in a Sith containment chamber to restrain it's power. When the Mandalorians attacked she was stranded on the planet for four thousand years. Over time people found her casket, drawn to the power within. Wars were fought over it and it was lost and found unti, brought to a nameless moon and captured by Darth Vader who released her, wanting her power. She defeated him and spurned Luke Skywalker when he was sent on a mission there. Abandoning herself to the galaxy she was found over a century later by Cade and after seeing his will and power joined him in his mission to destroy the Sith. They were succesful, but several times during the battle Muur wrenched control from her, she eventually surrendered to Cade, knowing he could finish the task, and died at his hand.

Jedi and Cade

OK we've basically covered most of it other than to say that Shado Vao found himself tempted by the Talisman, which he did not expect and that Cade and Azlyn began to explore some old feelings, much to Deliah's dismay.

Imperial Knight Updates

This lady did appear but as she isn't named or confirmed to be a Knight I won't say much. She was on Bastion sparring with Roan Fel when he heard the news about the Muur Talisman. She was allowed to hear the trnasmission so they may be on close terms, but no more was revealed.

Roan Fel

Roan Fel authorized his Knights to aid Cade in his assassination mission while Sia continues in a diplomatic mission with the Jedi Order. He was severly tempted by the Talisman and it's power to turn his enemies into creatures he could control and ordered his Knights to retrieve it after killing Krayt.

The Mission

This decision caused difficulties in the Knights, especially with Azlyn Ray. While Ganner and Azlyn fought Krayt, Antares went after the talisman, but was knocked out by Celeste, who saw him coming. Ganner was revealed as having feelings towards Azlyn, but her affections to him are unclear, especially with Cade in the mix. Ganner insisted that Azlyn be treated by Imperials, but Cade and Shado refused, seeing their actions with the Talisman as a betrayal. so Azlyn has gone with Cade and Ganner and Antares are returning to Bastion.

As always I've rambled on for way more than I should have - hope it's interesting anyways. More Legacy soon.

Star Wars Vector, Chapter 4: Legacy

The Star Wars crossover series reached it's conclusion when it reached Legacy, the Star Wars comics series I keep blabbing on about. Naturally this is a bit of a crossover for me as I am used to talking about Legacy, but am also doing a Vector review, so I'll try and keep this post looking at the big picture and then maybe do an 'updates' post to follow up on the Legacy specific side of things.

By the way - MASSIVE spoilers for Legacy and Vector in this post.

This story takes place in issues 28-31 of Legacy and follows on from Cade's visit to the Hidden Jedi Temple and his plan to assassinate the head of the Sith, Darth Krayt. But Cade and his company could not have anticipated the journey they would take as the Muur talisman's "Vector" crossed their paths. I'll chronicle that story for you now, and I'll try and keep it as brief as possible, but I have got four issues to cover.

The Pellaeon class Star Destroyer Iron Sun sits adrift in the deep core, abandoned to space. On board sits Celeste Morne alone but for a horde of Rakghouls, formerly the Destroyer's crew, and the spirit of Karness Muur to keep her company. After escaping her prison world in Rebellion, she had decided to travel the galaxy, but realized that the talisman was too dangerous and after an encounter with the Iron Sun, decided to remain there.

Cade and his crew travel through hyperspace on route to the deep Core outpost on Had Abbadon when they are suddenly yanked out of hyperspace. They are drawn into the hanger bay of a Star Destroyer only to find an abandoned ship and strange bones. Before they get to investigate they are set upon by Rakghouls and Cade and Azlyn are bitten. Celeste reveals her story to them and mentions her contact with Cade's ancestors. The Rakghoul plague starts to infect them, but Cade is able to use his powerful healing ability to counteract it and save them both. Celeste is impressed and agrees to join Cade on his quest to destroy the Sith.

The crew land and assault Had Abaddon base, with Celeste's ability to turn the troops into Rakghouls and control them proving very useful. Some are allowed to escape so that word gets back to Darth Krayt and draws him out. Word also reached Roan Fel, who decided that that talisman would be a valuable prize and instructs his Imperial Knights to retrieve it. This causes a lot of friction among the Knights and there is a lot of tension among the whole team as Karness Muur works his power among them.

Word eventually gets to Krayt, who travels to Had Abaddon along with Darth Stryfe, Talon, Maladi and Wyyrlok. They dig into the history of Muur on the way, revealing that he was one of the first Sith who, along with Krayt's mentor Xoxaan, fled the Republic and founded the dark order. Krayt lands, attracted by the possibility that Muur, or Cade, would heal him. But the team spring their trap and battle the Sith, but struggle with their internal battles as the Imperials splinter to go after Krayt and the talisman and Celeste struggles for control of her own body and the Rakghouls.

As the Knights fight the Darths, Celeste engages in a fierce battle with Krayt. Stryfe is taken out by Cade and Syn whilste Maladi and Shado battle Rakghouls and each other. Finally Azlyn sees an opening and takes a high aerial attack stabbing her blade through the Dark Lord's armour. This frees Celeste, who takes full control of her power and fills Krayt with lightning before hurling him off a cliff.

After that there is one more Sith to take care of, Celeste acknowledges that her control is slipping and ask Cade to do what must be done. He reluctantly agrees, and stabs his lightsaber through her chest, leaving a woman tortured for four millenia finally at peace. The Muur talisman quickly siezes Cade, but Cade has a strength no one anticipated - he does not desire power and so the temptations of Muur and the talisman have no hold on him so he uses the power of the force in him and shatters the talisman, destroying Muur and the Rakghoul plague forever.

But it is no happy ending for anyone on Had Abbadon. Azlyn was grievously wounded by Celeste's power, when she attacked Krayt and even Cade's ability can only just keep her alive. They take her away, knocking back the Imperial Knights, branding them traitors for going after the talisman.

Down on the surface lord Wyyrlok arrives and puts the injured Sith into bacta tanks then goes for the body of Krayt. When he arrives he finds his Sith Lord alive and desperate to continue his vision. Seeing weakness in his former master he finishes the job and executes him with force lightning, vowing to continue his master's dream, even if the dreamer has to die.

And that's it, the crossover is over - there is more comics new for this year with the return of Dark Times and a new series Invasion, which I'll tell you about another time, along with a few updates on the characters and events in Legacy.

Star Wars Vector, Chapter 3: Rebellion

Well Vector has moved forward in time once again, just a decade or two this time, from the Dark Times after the creation of the Empire to the time when those who hate the Emperor have amassed their forces and declared open rebellion against the Empire. Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca and a few lesser known series regulars face up to the terrifying Rakghoul plague in the third chapter of Vector.

The story slots into issues 15 and 16 of the Rebellion series, following on from 3 successful story arcs. Though a lot of series regulars appear in the book (and it is a direct continuation of the Rebellion storyline, so it doesn't disrupt regular readers) it is still very easy to follow from the previous chapter of Vector and since a lot of the key Star Wars cast are involved it's not too unfamiliar territory.

Well I'll quickly pop up a review for you all, remember this will be very spoilery so if you are keen on getting it yourself you may want to skip the rest of this...ok let's go. Our troubled heroin Celeste has been on an abandoned moon for a little under two decades, the soul keeper of a plague spreading talisman and the ghost of a Sith Lord driving her mad - the only positive effect seems to be that she hasn't aged a day!!

Well she has been abandoned, but she hasn't been forgotten - Vader remembers the powerful Jedi he left behind and the even more powerul weapon around her neck. He sends an expeditionary force, when he hears that the force has crashed and lost contact after sighting an individual on the planet he knows she is still alive and leaks the information to the rebels in the hope that the plague will spread and destroy them.

The plucky team of rebels land on the planet with a full commando force including Able, a clone soldier from the Clone Wars and Deena Shan a young and nervous volunteer who has been a key player in the series so far. The rebels find the crashed Imperial landers and are soon assaulted by the stormtroopers they brought down, now transformed into monstrous Rakghouls. Han and most of the others are pushed back to the Millenium Falcon and forced to leave Luke, Leia and Abel behind. The ship is soon harrassed by a Star Destroyer ordered by Vader to get the rebels to flee back to base, and so cannot return to rescue our heroes.

Luke ends up backed into a cave and is suddenly attacked by Celeste, crazed by her abandonment and the whispers of Karness Muur. Leia and Abel arrive to help Luke, but this further enrages Celeste, who assaults Leia and turns Abel into one of her mindless monsters. Karness however sense an opportunity for galactic conquest and the talisman leaps towards Luke and Leia, but Celeste, regaining her senses retrieves the talisman and once again accepts her burden - to keep Karness prisoner in her body and to halt the plague as much as possible.

She walks off, discarding Luke, who is eager to know more of the Jedi, but she has decided to explore the galaxy and takes of in the rebel assault sguttle to see more of the galaxy. As she leaves she passes the waiting Star Destroyer who are still listening for Vader, who realizes too late what is happening, the ship is overrun by the plague and crashes into the planet. Meanwhile the Falcon has been able to shake it's pursuers and rescue Luke and Leia who return to the fleet to mourn Abel and others lost and to contemplate the future of the Jedi and of the Rebellion.

Well the Legacy portion of Vector is currently being published so I'll share what happens next with you all in a month or two, that portion will be collected in the second volume of Vector along with the Rebellion story - Volume 1 of Vector will be released in January.

Star Wars Vector, Chapter 2: Dark Times

Vector has jumped a few thousand years an continues it's tale in the times when the new Galactic Empire is in control of the Galaxy Far Far Away. As in last time this review has some spoilers hidden inside.

The second chapter of the multi-title spanning series "Vector" has concluded it's second chapter, somewhat shorter than the first segment "Dark Times" hold issues 5 and 6 of the series. You're probably a bit late to get in on the action by now, so I'll do you a favour and fill you in.

This story carries on both from the first chapter and also from existing Dark Times stories. In Dark Times so far a Jedi, Dass Jennir and his soldier friend Bomo find themselves sole survivors of an Imperial massacre, they board a ship called the Uhumele and find a friendly crew and go out to seek a way to save Bomo's family, but nothing goes quite right and there aren't too many happy faces in these stories...they are Dark times after all. If you want to catch up on Dark Times the stories so far have been collected in graphic novel format with volume one out and volume two out sometime this month, which will bring you right up to Vector.

The latter part of the story was about a mysterious crate that the crew were trying to sell, in Vector we find that the crate contains none other than Celeste Morne, ancient Jedi with an even older curse. Trapped for four thousand years she is rudely awakened when the crew are betrayed once again and Darth Vader shows up to collect the powerful Sith artifact. Celeste wakes up in disorientation to find that everyone she knew is dead, the Republic is no more and that the Sith, the enemies she swore to destroy are in control of the galaxy.

She launches into an attack against Vader, but there is another power at work - Karness Muur, a Sith Spirit residing in the powerful, plague-inducing talisman wrapped around Celeste's neck. Muur eggs Celeste on, eager to bring out the darkness in her, she refuses, but starts to lose the battle. Muur changes his mind deciding to support Vader and gain a more powerful body and mind to control. Finding herself losing she makes a terrible decision and takes hold of the power of the talisman for herself to the dismay of Muur. As her power spreads so does the Rakghoul plague, infecting all nearby humans. This handily takes care of Vader's clone troopers, causing him to retreat to his shuttle, but tragically also kills Crys Taanzer, crewmember of the Uhumele. As both ships depart Celeste is left alone with her mindless Rakghouls and an ancient Sith ghosts, satisfied that even though she's trapped the evil is trapped with her.

Thus concludes this second chapter of Vector. The story has now moved on to Rebellion, a series set in the early days of the Rebel Alliance where Celeste may meet Vader once again and will most definitely be bumping into a certain son of his - exciting stuff on the way soon. Vector part one, collecting all the stories discussed so far will be out January next year. Dark Times is taking a break to make way for the Clone Wars stuff going on, with the movie and some tie in comics etc.

So that's it from Vector, but with a few more Legacy issues out and the Clone Wars movie coming to cinemas you bet you'll be hearing more from the galaxy far far away before too long.

Star Wars Vector, Chapter 1: Knights of the old Republic

This is a review so if by any chance you want to find out for yourself what happens don't read much beyond the first paragraph

The biggest event in Star Wars comics for a long time has reached the conclusion of it's first segment and I thought I should bring you up to speed as there's plenty of time to jump on board if you want to get in on the action of Vector the Star Wars comics crossover!

Vector is designed to be a big event in comics similar to the recent "Civil War" in Marvel, but designed to be less demanding on the reader and his wallet. The story crosses over the four current Star Wars comic titles: Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Times, Rebellion and Legacy in a linear storyline that all readers can join in with easily. The story is designed to attract new readers who can use Vector to jump into the existing storylines, get to know the characters through the events and maybe stick around to carry on reading after Vector has finished. But Vector also makes allowances for readers who just want to stick to their current reading pattern. Vector features the main characters from each title and creates a story that is as relevant to them as it is to the overall arc. A Kotor reader can just read the Kotor section and not feel lost because he hasn't picked up the rest of the continuity of comics - which I think is a wise move.

Those of you familiar with the names of the comics will have twigged to the fact that this story is covering well over 4000 years of Star Wars continuity. How will this work - I guess I'll tell ya...

The story centres around a character and an object - Celeste Morne and the Muur Talisman. Celeste is a shadow, a secret Jedi agent working for a shadowy group called the Covenant who will stop at nothing to prevent the Sith from rising. Celeste has been tasked with hunting down Sith artifacts and any other threats to the Jedi or the Covenant, but one artifact will test everything she knows. That artifact is the Muur Talisman created in times so ancient that even the Jedi of four thousand years before Luke Skywalker know little about it. The talisman has a power so dangerous that it can control life itself.

Celeste is sent to Taris an influencial outer rim world, now under occupation by the Mandalorians, to retrieve the Talisman, seen in visions by her masters. There she encounters not only the armoured warriors, but the vicious plague which transforms any living thing into a horrid beast known as a Rakghoul. Battling her way through the city she encounters Zayne Carrick, the principal character of the series, and his partner Griff, running through the city. Zayne is a fugitive framed by his (and Celeste's) masters for the murder of several Jedi students. Finding herself unwillingly partnered with them she tracks the artifact to a Mandalorian camp. She soon learns that Zayne is the one her masters condemn, but quickly realises he couldn't be responsible, causing her to question her loyalty to her masters.

They followed the Mandalorians to Jebble an ice fortress where Pulsipher a Mandalorian scientist had brought the artifact. But soon things turned for the worse - the Rakghoul plague had spread there, and it was the artifact that caused it. Worse the artifact enabled the monsters to think and act intelligently using weapons and ships to spread their plague further. When Celeste arrived the artifact detected a Jedi presence and latched onto her, giving her even greater control over the plague and unleashing the mind of it's Sith owner, Karness Muur. It was only Zayne that made the Sith influence in her stop and she asked Zayne to kill her to end the plague, but instead he found Lord Dreypa's Oubliette, a stasis/torture chamber from which the talisman could not escape. Celeste hid in it, telling Zayne that she believed him and assisting him on his path for justice by giving him a location for where he should go next. Zayne sealed her in, but at that moment the Mandalorian fleet arrived and bombarded the planet, destroying the Rakghouls and leaving Celeste stranded for a long, long time...

Well that's it so far, the story jumps to Dark Times, which follows Episode 3 and Order 66 where a crew of smugglers have obtained a very interesting and valuable piece of cargo. If you have a comic shop nearby and want to jump onboard the first issue of the Dark Times should be on shelves now - unless it's sold out!

"VECTOR" begins

Ir's probably now a bit too late now, but if you have a comic book shop near you you might just have time to nip down and grab the first installment of the new Star Wars crossover series - Vector. It'll look a bit like this:

The series starts with Knights of the old Republic issue 25, but the cover has some familiar faces and VECTOR splashed over it so it shouldn't be too hard to spot. Knights of the old Republic is set in an era experienced in the games of the same name, about 4000 years before Luke sets out on his adventure.

It has yet to be explained how the story fits through to Luke's time and onward to the Legacy era you should be fairly familiar with by now - if you want to know more ask the comic book shop if they have Legacy 0.5 when you pop in. Nonetheless it's sure to be a good ride and one worth hopping on board if you're new to Star Wars comics. Though KotoR may be unfamiliar territory to most the issue is written so that new readers can get on board with the action without having to know too much of the backstory.

The story centres around an ancient Sith Talisman whose power over life makes it a desirable prospect to many forces and it's impact will clearly last a long time. In KotoR the two main heroes Zayne and Gryph stumble into a secret Jedi agent sent to recover it and the stage is set for more adventure. I can;t really say more without spoiling the whole plot so I'll leave you with that and see if you fancy it.

The story statys with KotoR for four issues (25-28) then moves on to Dark Times, which is set in the aftermath of Order 66.
